Sugar & Sweeteners Reports

Indian Sugar Crop and Import Outlook

Today’s sugar prices highlight a major imbalance between global supply and demand, and India lies at the heart of this imbalance. The question is raised, which has far-reaching implications for world sugar prices over the next 12-18 months:

Will India continue to import sugar in 2011 and if so how much?

LMC’s report forecasts sugar production in 2010/11 and the likelihood of further imports in 2011.

The report answers key questions:
  • How do the returns from alternative crops compare with sugarcane and what will be the effect on area under cane?
  • How does government policy influence farmers’ planting decisions?
  • What determines how much cane is sold to gur and khandsari manufacturers rather than sugar producers?
  • To what extent is the size of the crop a function of the weather?
  • Will India import sugar in 2011 and if so how much?
