Examples of consultancy projects
An overview of the global cocoa sector, including profiles of the eight largest cocoa producers, an analysis of trends in consumption and prices, and projections of supply-demand balances and prices to 2010.

An evaluation of the STCP’s group marketing schemes in Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon  to determine the financial benefits  to cocoa farmers. The study involved comparing the STCP's schemes with other marketing initiatives and assessing the scope for their expansion.

An examination of the position of Cameroon as a supplier of cocoa beans and products and providing conclusions on the implications for Cameroon's cocoa policy, including an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of Cameroon's cocoa vis-à-vis its competitors, taking into account the view of cocoa processing companies and chocolate manufacturers.

 A study examining the use of cocoa powder by the cigarette industry.

In the light of an increase in cocoa powder ratios, an analysis of trends in cocoa powder demand by region, examining the supply-demand balance and considering the future outlook for cocoa powder demand

An analysis of the quantity and quality of stocks held in the major cocoa importing countries of Europe and North America, providing detailed estimates of the origins of the stocks and, where possible, their age.

A study for the Ivorian government examining the financial and economic viability of processing cocoa in Côte d'Ivoire. The study also compared production costs between Ivorian and European cocoa processors and analysed the effect of taxes and subsidies on the viability of Ivorian operations. 

A study for the European Commission to assist the development of a cocoa trade development strategy for ACP countries. The study included analysis of the major constraints facing ACP cocoa sectors, the donors working in the sectors, the success of donor programmes in assessing these constraints and strategies for future EU support.

A study for the government of a cocoa producing country examining the feasibility of establishing either a semi-product cocoa processing plant (liquor, butter, powder) or a chocolate plant.

For the UK’s Department for International Development, fact sheets on the coffee, cocoa and tea industries covering production, consumption and  prices, as well as technical annexes on the importance of these industries to the UK economy,  their importance to rural livelihoods, niche markets, regulation, the supply chain and marketing margins and the use of futures markets. The study was produced as both a paper version  and a web-based resource.  

Recommendations for the process of the liberalisation of cocoa export marketing for the Government of Ghana. This included analysis of liberalisation in other countries and proposals for the phasing of the different stages of the changes.

A review of the market for cocoa butter equivalent fats (CBEs) as well as the markets for the 'exotic' fats from which many CBEs are partly derived for a major agro industrial processor.

 An assessment of systems of support for cocoa smallholders in Ghana, with proposals for export crop diversification.

A brief paper, prepared at the request of a major international bank, provided profiles of the world's major cocoa processing companies and of several specialist processors of low grade cocoa

A comprehensive study of the world cocoa market, covering cocoa bean production and consumption, trade flows in cocoa products, and the structure of the cocoa, cocoa products and chocolate industry.

The latest of LMC's series of comprehensive of studies assessing cocoa production costs around the world. The LMC Worldwide Survey of Cocoa Production Costs: 2003 Report extends LMC’s unique analysis to include the 2001/02 cocoa year. The analysis breaks the costs down into the four main stages of production: establishment, maintenance, harvesting and fermentation/drying, with each being further disaggregated into labour, fertiliser/chemical, capital and sundry, and administration elements.
